Notes

Malcolm III "Caenmore" , King of Scotland

The son of King Duncan I, Malcolm lived in exile in England during part of the reign of his father's murderer, MacBeth. Malcolm killed MacBeth in battle in 1057 and then ascended the throne. After the conquest of England by William the Conqueror in 1066, Malcolm gave refuge to the Anglo-Saxon prince Edgar the Ætheling and his sisters, one of whom, Margaret (later St. Margaret), became his second wife.
Malcolm acknowledged the overlordship of William in 1072 but nevertheless soon violated his feudal obligations and made five raids into England. During the last of these invations was killed by the forces of king William II Rufus. Except for a brief interval after Malcolm's death, the Scottish throne remained in his family until the death of Queen Margaret, the Maid of Norway, in 1290. Of malcolm's six sons by Margaret, three succeeded to the throne: Edgar (reigned 1097-1107), Alexander I (1107-1024) and David I (1124-1153).

1858. Edgar the Peaceable , King of Scotland

Edgar (1097-1107)
Born around 1074, Edgar was the fourth son of Malcolm III and St Margaret. He found refuge in England on his father's death and, about 1095, William II of England recognised him as the rightful King of Scots. In return, Edgar agreed to hold Scotland as William's vassal. The following year, an English army helped Edgar to seize the throne from his uncle, Donald III. In 1100, his sister Matilda (Maud) married Henry I of England and so he became the English king's brother-in-law. Edgar's submissive attitude to England and his presentation of the Western Isles to the king of Norway led to his (insulting) nickname 'the Peaceable'. He himself did not marry, and died in Edinburgh Castle on 8 January 1107 aged about 33.

1618. Gospatrick I , Earl of Dunbar & March, Earl of Northumbria, Lord of Bamburgh

Gospatric, or Gwas Patrick, meaning servant of Patrick, was allied to noble lineage on both sides of the house, uniting the Celtic descent of his father, Maldred, with the royal stock of Wessex, from which his mother came. He was made Earl of Northumberland by William the Conqueror, but later William accused him of an alliance with the Danes and deprived him of the earldom. Gospatric fied to the court of the King of Scotland, Malcolm III, who made him Earl of Dunbar. He had two sons, Dolfin and Waldene, who took the name of Dunbar, and another son, [Gospatric, 2nd Earl of Dunbar]
