Ethelwulf (Æthelwulf, Noble Wolf) , King of Wessex
It was in his reign that the Danes finally deared to winter in England for the first time. He routed them in 851.
By the "disinterested" advise of St. Swithin, Bishop of Winchester, he granted all of his dominions to the Church.
687. Lady Æthelflaeda , "The Lady of the Mercians"
The oldest daughter of Alfred the Great, Æthelflaed (Ethelfleda) ruled the ssemi-independent English province of Mercia. Her leadership earned her the title "Lady of the Mercians."
After 886, she married Ethelred, who went on to become "alderman" of Mercia. Together, they organized its defense against incursions by the Danes. After the death of Ethelred, Æthelfled continued to govern Mercia by herself. During her rule she proved to be a woman of great political, diplomatic and military skill. She successfully paled the Danes, Scots and Welsh off against each other and, with her brother Edward the Elder, King of Wessex, she directed military expeditions against the Welsh and the Danes. They captured Derby, Leicester and York, and recovered all the Danish-held lands south of the Humber River. They also constructed a series of fortresses against the Danes, including those at Runcorn, Strafford and Warwick. After Æthelflaeda's death, Edward fully incorporated Mercia into the kingdom of Wessex.
